Shane Warne, Captain of Rajasthan Royals, Saurav Ganguly Captain of Kolkata Knight Riders and the umpire Pratap Kumar were penalized by Indian Premier League for their conduct on 1 May 2008 at Jaipur during a match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals.
The action was taken based on the recommendations of the Match Referee Farokh Engineer.
Saurav Ganguly was found guilty of a Level I offence as per the ICC Code of Conduct. He had prevailed upon the umpire Pratap Kumar to refer a decision to the TV (third) umpire. Ganguly was fined 10% of his match fee.
Shane Warne too was fined 10% for violating Section 1.7 of ICC Code of Conduct. He too was announced guilty of a Level I offence. He was charged of publicily criticizing Saurav Ganguly for the (on-field) incident at the end of a game.
Umpire Pratap Kumar has been suspended for one match as the Match Referee saw no reason for him to give in to Ganguly's request.
The controversial conduct had happened on 1st May 2008 during an IPL Twenty20 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Rajasthan Royals. Saurav Ganguly had refused to walk after Graeme Smith "caught" him deep midwicket. Ganguly got the on-field umpire to refer the decision to the TV umpire.
The decision was referred to the third umpire and Ganguly was given not out due to inconclusive footage despite Graeme Smith's confidence that he had taken a clean catch before the ball hit the ground.
Shane Warne had later criticized Ganguly for his action saying that it is not in the spirit of the game to ask the umpire to go for the TV replay.
